PARAMARIBO – The Chinese community recently expressed serious concerns in response to the many armed robberies that were carried out in the past couple of weeks. “Most of the victims of these armed robberies are members of the Chinese community,” ...
said the Suriname Chinese United Association (SCUA) before adding that Chinese people were targeted during seven armed robberies that were carried out in the past two months. According to the SCUA the armed robberies did not only take place in Paramaribo but also in
Brokopondo and Para. Other Chinese organizations pointed out that in most cases the victims were assaulted, held against heir will and even shot dead. The SCUA also expressed its disapproval regarding the fact that it usually takes the police a very long time to show up at the crime scene. It also pointed out that most of the perpetrators still have not been caught. Given the alarming situation, the acting chairman of the SCUA Andy Liu
Jianming recently sent a letter to
President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to express the concerns of the people.
“We urge you to take firm action, deploy more police officers and to make it easier for entrepreneurs in Suriname to obtain a firearm so that they can defend themselves. If crime is not tackled effectively soon, people could become restless and foreign invest could also plummet. The Chinese community stands ready to contribute to unity, reforms and to support social initiatives,” said the SCUA.
