PARAMARIBO – Home Affairs (BIZA) Minister Marinus Bee recently announced that he wants to address the issue of the excess of political advisors...

within the government. He explained that he wants to implement structural reforms to tackle the uncontrolled flow of political advisors.
Minister Bee made it clear that “the current system is unbearable.” “Every minister who comes into office brings along a personal team,” said Minister Bee who added that these advisors are left behind when each minister is replaced although there is no work for them to do. “You are left with 200 people who keep getting their salary even though they are sitting at home. That is not what we want,” said Minister Bee who therefore wants to have a bill passed to address the issue. The bill will be aimed at making sure that the employment of political advisors automatically ends when the minister who hired them leaves the political post. Minister Bee explained that the proper legislation will help prevent the system from becoming clogged up.
He acknowledged that this reform is a sensitive issue and that political parties must be consulted before the proposal can be presented to parliament as a bill. “One needs support,” said Minister Bee who added that reforms are required. “Or else the system will remain clogged.”
