PARAMARIBO – After MP Genevievre Jordan (ABOP) had revealed via Facebook that a ‘foreign army’ was active on Surinamese territory near the Sara Creek,...

Police Commissioner Melvin Pinas sent several police units that received assistance from the army to the area. 14 people were arrested as a result of this operation that was carried out on Tuesday afternoon. MP Jordan called on the government to shed some light in the situation. She explained that the area attracts many small scale gold miners which is why it must be protected. “This is happening in our hinterland! A foreign army in our territory…..Sara Creek. We demand answers. The nation immediately wants an explanation,” said MP Jordan. MP Ronnie Brunswijk (ABOP) visited the area after he had been informed of the situation by MP Jordan. The footage that made its way to social media quickly went viral and triggered different responses. While some followers expressed their concern regarding the presence of foreigners on Surinamese soil others think that a security company was carrying out a training program. MP Jordan found the issue alarming and therefore decided to inform the nation and to demand an explanation from the government. She claimed that the area surrounding the Sara Creek is an area in Brokopondo that has many good deposits and where the gold miners operate at many locations. Meanwhile the police and army units are busy looking for other people who are conducting illegal operations in the area.
