2 injured in late-night shooting in Sophia

GUYANA - Two men were allegedly shot last Tuesday evening in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown.

Injured are 34-year-old Andra Stewart, of Guyhoc Park and Fifth Street, Alberttown and 22-year-old Lidj Grant of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown. Reports are that the incident occurred at approximately 22:00hrs. The Guyana Police Force stated that two unidentified men allegedly carried out the shooting while dressed in dark-coloured clothing and face masks and armed with handguns.

“According to the victims, on the date and time mentioned, they were riding two separate motorcycles, heading North in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, in the vicinity of Mercy Wing Vocational Centre, when the two suspects rode up to them on a motorcycle (registration number unknown) and began to discharge several rounds in their direction. The victims said they jumped off their motorcycles and ran behind a truck which was parked on the parapet of the street. The suspects continued riding their motorcycle and made good their escape,” police said.

The report said Stewart sustained a gunshot wound to his right lower back, while Grant received a gunshot wound to the right upper back. Stewart and Grant were taken to a hospital in a stable condition, where they were both admitted. The police said the scene was processed by ranks of the Crime Lab CID HQ, and 15 suspected 9mm spent shells were found. Several persons were questioned, and efforts were made to locate the suspects, but without success. CCTV cameras in the area captured the scene, and investigators observed that it was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the victims. The victims’ hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue.

Kaieteur News visited the crime scene last Tuesday evening. Upon reporter’s arrival, several police officers were observed in the area in the company of persons living in the area. Residents told this newspaper what they heard, as they expressed fear and trauma. “I went liming pon de corner and all I hear was ‘dududud’, I thought was squib, I hear real gunshot. It happen right on the road, I went inside we frighten for we life,” one resident stated. (Kaieteur News)
