PARAMARIBO – The Traffic Safety Month started on August 15th but the streets are not safe because traffic accidents have already claimed two lives and multiple collisions have been reported.
Last Sunday a motorcyclist died shortly after a traffic accident and last Monday a womanwhose car had flipped over before ending up in the Boomskreek died at the Intensive Care Unit of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). This is the 13th time that the Traffic Safety Month has been organized. At the start of the TSM Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath urged road users to drive below the speedlimit and not to let anything or anyone distract them while they are driving. According to the police, speeding is just one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents. There are also other causes such as alcohol and drug abuse and using a smartphone while driving. The recent traffic accidents have made it clear that the message still has not gotten through to everyone. The Traffic Safety Month ends om September 15th.
