Friday. The traffic stop was conducted under the supervision of the regional police chief of Marowijne, Henry Kia, and in association with representatives of the court system. Police officials explained that the police operation which was supported by soldiers of the National Army and the Administrative Service of the Marowijne North East District Commissioner’s Office was aimed at tracking down and arresting the people who had been convicted of a traffic violation but whose verdict had not been executed yet. District Commissioner Marvin Vijent reportedly supported the joint operation. There were reportedly 11 road deaths in the Traffic Safety Month which started on August 15th and which was concluded in the Lalla Rookh Building on September 15th. This is twice the number of road deaths that was registered at the conclusion of last year’s TSM. Police officials emphasized that traffic safety is a joint responsibility of the government and the community. Justice and Safety Minister Harish Monorath pointed out that there have already been 74 road deaths in Suriname this year.
