PARAMARIBO – The political puzzle for the next 5 years has been put on the table. The Natio-nal Democratic Party (NDP), ABOP, the National Party Suriname (NPS), Pertjajah Luhur (PL), BEP and Alternatief 2020 (A20) on Sunday night signed the collaboration ...
agreement for 2025-2030 in Prince Ballroom. “We have signed and the focus is on transparency, honesty and not on corruption. Those who cross the line will face the consequences. All of the parties in Suriname have issues with each other but we must realize that the country has reached a point where we must bury all of these issues. The succes of this new administration will depend on people who are mature enough to see the nation’s best interest and to address little interests and issues in a mature manner,” said Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, chairwoman of the NDP. These past couple of days the NDP held negotiations with the 5 other parties regarding key positions within the government. Last weekend all 6 parties organized a meeting with their structures to get permission for the collaboration agreement. The NDP which has 18 parliamentary seats will get the presidency, the chairmanship of parliament and 7 ministries. It reportedly has the most important ministries namely Finance, Foreign Affairs (BUZA), Public Works, Health, Agriculture, Spatial Planning & Environment and Sports and Youth Affairs. The NPS which has 6 seats will get the vice presidency, governor of the Central Bank and the substitute position for the deputy chairmanship of parliament. It will also get 3 ministries namely Education, Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) and a new ministry namely Energy (Oil & Gas). These are all strategic posts that are essential to social and economic development. ABOP which also has 6 seats will get the deputy chairmanship of parliament even though a section of the party does not agree with this. It will also get 4 ministries namely Natural Resources, Justice & Police, Home Affairs (BIZA) and Regional Development & Labor. Pertjajah Luhur (PL) which has 2 seats will get the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Land and Forest Management. A20 which has 1 seat will get the Ministry of Economic Affairs while BEP which also has 1 seat will get the Ministry of Transportation, Communication and Tourism (TCT).
