KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Approximately $650 million will be allocated in the new fiscal year for the continued development of infrastructure and facilities aimed at boosting agricultural and tourism activities in rural communities across the island.

These initiatives will be carried out under the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) II, which seeks to enhance market access and promote climate-resilient approaches for targeted beneficiaries in the tourism and agricultural sectors. According to the 2025/26 Estimates of Expenditure, recently tabled in the House of Representatives, planned activities for the new fiscal year include the continued provision of agricultural inputs to women and youth, as well as the procurement and installation of equipment for the All-Island Banana Growers Association and the Red Ridge Bank Community Benevolent Society. Funds will also be used to complete the redevelopment of a tilapia fish hatchery and the construction of a cold storage facility at Windalco, Kirkvine.
Other key targets for the 2025/26 fiscal year include: Commencing and completing the construction of a greenhouse nursery in Watermount. Providing drip-irrigation facilities to farmers involved in the Amity Hall Farmers’ Cooperative and the Ebony Park Agro Cooperative Society. Providing relief support for individuals affected by Hurricane Beryl. As of December 2024, income-generating small grants had been provided to 2,723 farmers, including women and youth, as well as 413 fisherfolk. Additionally, 698 beneficiaries received agronomic support through Coffee Traders Limited in the form of training and agricultural inputs. Business development facilitators were also engaged to assist in the preparation of business plans. Furthermore, the Hanover Bee Bottling Facility was expanded and fully equipped.
