67-year-old woman perishes in fire at retirement home

PARAMARIBO – A fire that broke out in a retirement home located in the Ankielaan in Uitvlugt on Saturday morning claimed the life of a 67-year-old woman.

Police units and firefighters rushed to the scene as soon as they had received the call. About 22 residents were in the retirement home at the time of the fire. While firefighters were extinguishing the fire, they found a charred body of 67-year-old A.C. on the upper floor of the building. Officers from the forensics division found clues which indicate that the fire most likely started in the room of A.C. The mattrass of the senior citizen who was known as a chain smoker caught fire. The police officers also found a lighter in het room. The investigation is ongoing.
