PARAMARIBO - Reports indicate that 68 shipping containers that contain fireworks have arrived in Suriname.

Additional shipments of fireworks are expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks. Fire Department Spokesman Olton Pinas explained that all of the shipping containers are inspected to make sure that no illegal fireworks have been imported. The inspections are also aimed at making sure that the imported fireworks meet all legal and safety standards. The people from the Fire Department Suriname also screen the labels, the manner in which the fireworks are packaged and how and where they are stored. Importers who do not stick to the existing rules risk losing their permits.
The Fire Department Suriname made it clear that loud firectackers have been blacklisted which means that it is illegal to import them. All of the fireworks that have passed inspection and have been given the green light can be sold to consumers. The Fire Department Suriname also keeps an eye on the way fireworks are distributed.
