PARAMARIBO - Ashwin Adhin (NDP) is officially the new chairman of Parliament. He won the election as he got two third of the votes namely 34 votes while his opponent, Dew Sharman (VHP) , got the remaining votes.
Ronnie Brunswijk is the new deputy chairman of parliament. He was elected unanimously because the VHP, the only opposition party, dit not present a candidate for the position. “We will support the candidate,” said MP Asiskumar Gajadien on behalf of the VHP. During the election, the legislators from the NDP, NPS, PL and A20 showed their ballots to everybody in the room. The legislators from the VHP strongly objected to this and claimed that this was a violation of the rules. The acting chairman of paiament, Rabindre Parmessar, responded to their protest by making it clear that he would never allow parliament’s rules of procedure to be violated. His words emboldened the members of the NDP faction as they proudly showed their ballots to prove that they had voted for Adhin. The decision to show the ballots was made prior to the election because of the rumors that attempts were made to bribe legislators to vote for the candidate from the other side. The legislators from BEP and ABOP did not show their ballots but the results of the election clearly showed that they had also voted for Adhin.
