GUYANA – With the Guyana Elections Commission GECOM stating that the revised list of electors stands at 757,715...
as of June 15, 2015, the Alliance For Change AFC said that that number is “phe-nomenal” for a country with an unknown population.
Leader of the AFC Nigel Hughes told reporters at his party’s press conference on Friday noted that his party wrote to GECOM requesting a list of districts and sub-divisions which GECOM conducted prescribed investigations and cancelled reg-istration of the deceased from the list of eligible voters from 2022 to present. GECOM is yet to respond.
“I mentioned this because this week, we heard that the eligible voter. The number of eligible voters in the country exceeds 700,000 people. That is a phenomenal number for a country, but we don’t know how the official population is we ha-ven’t received the census,” he stressed. The politician reasoned that for a country with roughly 780,000 to 800,000 persons having over 700,000 eligible voters will be problematic, hence the request was made almost a month ago to ascertain how many persons and where exactly GECOM conducted the exercises, to re-move the deceased from the registered voters’ list. we believe, yet again, GECOM is demonstrating its lack of capacity to be able to hold an election which is credi-ble. We’d like to urge them not only to respond to our letters, but also to hold frequent public information engagements in which these issues were raised not only by the contestants, but by the press so that citizens can be addressed,” he urged.
The information was provided as the commission approved symbols for 19 polit-ical parties contesting the General and Regional Elections ahead of Nomination Day slated for Monday. Kaieteur News understands that the list is yet to undergo the process by which GECOM shall make all the necessary removals from, and corrections to extract the official list of electors. Recently, opposition-nominated GECOM Commissioner, Vincent Alexander expressed concerns about chairper-son, Justice Ret’d Claudette Singh, being missing in action as the Commission is still to determine a number of critical issues including the methodology for the removal of the names of unregistered dead persons from the Register of Regis-trants. He said GECOM continued that discussion at a previous meeting. (Kaieteur News)
