INDIA – At least 11 people have died and more than 30 others have been injured in a crowd crush outside a cricket stadium in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, authorities said.
The crush occurred as tens of thousands of cricket fans gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate the winners of the Indian Premier League, the world’s most popular T20 cricket tournament. Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the crowd attempted to break through one of the stadium gates to join the celebrations. He reported that 11 people were killed and 33 injured, most of whom are in stable condition and receiving treatment in hospitals. “At a time of celebration, this unfortunate event should not have happened. We are saddened by this,” he said, speaking to reporters. “No one expected this crowd.”bCricket fans had come out to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first Indian Premier League title win on Tuesday.
