Berbice businessman shot dead by bandits

GUYANA - A 54-year-old businessman lost his life tragically last Thursday morning, after he was shot during a robbery at his business place located by his home at Lot 119 Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice.

Dead is Hemchan Utan. The incident occurred at 10:30h, while Utan was conducting usual business at his home. Police reported that while he was doing business, a man pounced on him and said, “give me the money.”

Following that a scuffle ensued, which resulted in the suspect discharging a round from the firearm he was allegedly armed with. The suspect then fled the scene, leaving an injured Utan behind. The victim was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he succumbed unfortunately, to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery. Police confirmed that a suspect is in custody assisting with investigations. Notably, a motorcar, which is suspected to be the getaway vehicle was lodged. (Kaieteur News)
