Home Affairs Minister Marinus Bee explained that the government has kept its promise of addressing the ghost employee issue. He pointed out that because of the measure the government has to spend SRD 200 million less on salaries. Several months ago BIZA announced that 2,154 civil servants were missing and that they would be given one last chance to get registered but only 39 reportedly showed up. “If we say that we will take action than that is exactly what we are going to do,” said Minister Bee. The ministry has not only frozen payment of salaries to the bank accounts of these ghost employees but it has also initiated the procedure of removing them from its workforce. Minister Bee emphasized that the government must stick to the law and that salaries can’t be blocked osut of the blue because the government could lose the lawsuits. Each case is there handled in accordance with the rules. According to Minister Bee, the remaining 896 files are still under review.
