PARAMARIBO – Hundreds of people who had applied for a job at the nation’s polling stations located in Paramaribo and who had already received special training recently quit. This means that the Ministry of Home Affairs (BIZA) will...
literally have to pay the price because it must cover additional costs to train a new group of people. About 400 people have reportedly decided not to work on Election Day, May 25th. The director at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mohamad Nasier Eskak, announced that a new group of 250 people were trainedlast Friday but that 500 are actually needed. He gave his assurance that the people who dropped out would be replaced before Election Day. A second group of 250 people will also be trained soon. The Ministry of Home Affairs is trying to solve this problem by contacting people who have already worked at a polling station in the past. Director Eskak explained that ten people are supposed to work at each polling station. He confirmed that the ministry would have to spend more money to pay for the additional training programs. In order to prevent this from happening again the Ministry of Home Affairs will ask people who apply for this job to sign an agreement so that they can't quit before Election Day. “For the elections of 2030 each member of a polling station will be required to sign an agreement stating that people who quit without a valid reason will not receive payment,” said Eskak who added that various reasons were given by the people who recently decided to call it quits. Some stated they they quit due to personal reasons why others stated that they no longer felt like working at a polling station.
“There is no reason to panic. The elections are not in danger. They are guaranteed,” said Director Eskak. Meanwhile the Independent Election Bureau (OKB) has also expressed grave concern regarding the latest developments which it called alarming. It believes that the dropouts have opted to work for political parties because they pay more than BIZA. The OKB explained that one must not forget that polling station workers often have to wait many months for their payment.
