to Apoera and vice versa sank in the Corantijn River near South-Drain on Saturday. There were reportedly nine people on board including four children. Thanks to the swift response of the soldiers from the National Army the people who were on the boat could be brought to safety. Several members of the Fire Department Suriname (KBS) rushed to the scene after they had heard the news. Police officers were also at the location to provide assistance. After being rescued the people who were on the boat were brought to the State Guest House. The DC’s Office also provided food and clothes. District Commissioner Mohamed Ultaf Bakas went to South-Drain to assess the situation personally and to provide a helping hand. The boat sustained a lot of damage and the engine disappeared in the river. The mishap is currently being investigated. DC Bakas thanked the soldiers from the National Army, the firefighters from the Fire Department Suriname and the police for their swift response and commitment to the rescue operation. The DC’s Office will keep a close eye on the situation and will also keep providing assistance to the families whenever it becomes necessary.
