PARAMARIBO - The number of burglaries at school are still on the rise. Last Tuesday another primary school located at Flora was targeted by burglars who entered the principal’s office via the ceiling before ransacking everything.
The security guard who was in duty noticed the break-in on Tuesday night before informing his superior who then contacted the principal of that school. It is not the first time that this primary school was burglarized. One of the teachers told Times of Suriname that it did not seem like anything was taken. She deemed it regrettable that burglars keep targeting the school. Several principals whose schools are located in Flora fear for their safety during school hours. Another teacher explained that all of the teachers fear that the perpetrators might strike in broad daylight if they do not find anything of value at night. The principals and the teachers urge the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture to do business with professional security companies. Education Minister Henry Ori recently sounded the alarm over the number of break-ins at the nation’s schools. He revealed that there had been at least 16 break-ins in the past three to four weeks. Minister Ori pointed out that high schools in particular are being targeted. He explained that the ministry was considering doing business with private security firms.
