MP Raghoenandan pointed out that the government must make sure that schools are actually ready to welcome students in a safe, healthy and adequate environment. “Children come to school with dreams, expectations and ambitions. Parents entrust their children to our schools and teachers are once again ready to teach them their knowledge, skills and values,” said MP Raghoenandan who added that the toilets at many schools are in a bad shape. “Most of the schools have poor sanitary facilities. Children go to school, attend classes the entire day and go home without having used the toilets at school because the toilets are so dirty that the children do not want to use them,” said MP Raghoenandan before pointing out that clean and properly maintained toilets are not a luxury but a basic requirement that must be part of a healthy learning environment. “The government must not only look at the presence of teachers and materials for the lessons but it must also look at the general shape of school buildings and toilets as thousands of students are about to return to the classrooms. Each child is entitled to an environment that is clean, safe and suitable for learning.”
