PARAMARIBO - The results of the elections that were held based on the new electoral system has surprised many people as it shows the nationwide strength of the political parties. However, ...
the new system requires some additional fine-tuning to amplify the democratic right of the voters at the polls. It has become evident that people with very little support and a number of minimum votes will still get to become a member of parliament at the expense of others who got far more votes. The current system does not enable candidates with the majority of votes to get a parliamentary seat. Mike Noersalim
(NDP) who is in the top 30 of candidates with the most votes reportedly reeled in more than 1,800 votes but is kept outside of parliament while top members of the party and current members of parliament such as Stephen Tsang, Melvin Bouva and Claudi Sabajo will return to parliament even though some of them did not even reel in 500 votes. The need for an electoral system where candidates with the majority of votes actually get a fair chance of making it to parliament despite of their spot on the list of candidates has also become evident on other lists. Irshaad Fatehmahomed (NPS) made it to the finish line with less than 200 votes while Raoul Hellings (NPS) who got more than 1,700 votes did not get a seat. In the ABOP only Ronnie Brunswijk, Marinus Bee and Dinotha Vorswijk reeled in more than 1,000 votes but the party still got 6 seats. David Abiamofo got 1,000 votes but missed his chance because he is on the 7th spot while his fellow party member Edgar Sampie who got less than 500 will return to parliament for a second term. Ines Pane, the current minister of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo), will get a seat in parliament although she reeled in less than 300 votes. Umesh Biharie from the VHP will not become a legislator although he got 1,200 votes while Cheryl Dijksteel who is also from the VHP will return for a second term despite reeling in less than 250 votes. Vedanti Jarbandhan who is new on the list also secured a seat in parliament although she reeled in only 129 votes.
