Pinas referred to the fire that recently destroyed a house and a spray shop located in the Goton Royongweg as he pointed out that the Fire Department Suriname has issued warnings on multiple occasions. He told Times of Suriname that the fire spread quickly when the father of the owner of the spray shop was busy burning leaves and garbage in the backyard. The fire ‘jumped’ to a coconut tree before spreading to the house of the owner. Pinas pointed out that the man had most likely underestimated the possible consequences of burning garbage. “The fire department has warned people many times not to burn garbage. People must be very careful because the fire can spread rapidly under certain circumstances,” said Pinas. The fire also destroyed 19 vehicles. 6 other vehicles were scorched by the flames. The building was not insured against fire which means that the owner will have to cover the damage to the vehicles depending on the type of car insurance that the owners of the cars have.
