was involved in a traffic accident in De Nieuwe Grondweg died at the hospital on January 4th. Sunday afternoon a cyclist died after being hit by a delivery van.

The officers from the Traffic Unit at De Nieuwe Grond Police Station received a call about a traffic accident around 2:15 and went to the scene of the accident. When they arrived there they spotted the 17-year-old passenger and moped rider ES. The moped rider could not give a clear explanation as to what had happened. ES was in critical condition. The police report indicates that the moped rider lost control over the steering wheel and went off road near the crossing with the Tout Luit Faut Kanaalweg.

Both victims were rushed to the Emergency Room at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) in an ambulance from Surcad. Several hours later ES who had a serious head injury passed away. ES then officially became the first road death in 2026. The news of his death was a shock for his family. The other deadly traffic accident happened when the driver of the delivery van switched to the other side of the road and hit the cyclist. The police urges riders and drivers especially the young ones to be extra careful in traffic because “each road death is one too many.”
