Prior to the drastic increase in power consumption the EBS managed to meet the demand but the current growth has made it impossible for the company to keep up with the demand due to the lack of the capacity to generate more electricity. As a result of this the EBS cuts off the electricity supply in the EPAR region which covers five districts namely Paramaribo, Para, Wanica, Commewijne and Saramacca. Each district experiences a blackout of at least 3 hours as a result of the loadshedding.The EBS cannot indicate when and where the loadshedding will take place as the loadshedding depends on the power consumption and the weather conditions in each region. The company urges households, companies and factories to minimize the use of electricity. Electrical appliances must be shut down when they are not needed.
