PARAMARIBO - The position of the director of the Energy Company Suriname (EBS), Leo Brunswijk, is currently under pressure. Multiple sources from within the EBS have confirmed that he has been suspended by the board of directors at the EBS.

Meanwhile documents which suggest that the top executive is involved in questionable contracts and business arrangements have been leaked. Brunswijk had announced a press conference for March 1st but it was cancelled. He explained that President Jennifer Simons is currently busy with the issue which is why he wanted to “give her space to do her thing.” Brunswijk did not explain what he meant by that but announced that the press conference would be held in another date as he wants to shed light on the situation within the EBS and in particular the contracts that have raised eyebrows. “Today the name Leo Brunswijk was hot on social media,” said Brunswijk as he referred to the comments and speculations that are circulating online. Leo Brunswijk who was appointed director of the state company when his brother, Ronnie Brunswijk, held the vice presidency has been the topic of public discussions due to his alleged involvement in irregularities surrounding the delivery of lumber to the EBS, agreements with suppliers of machines and tensions with the union that represents the workers of the EBS. His way of running the state company has also resulted in friction with other executives. Sources from within the EBS and those surrounding the shareholder pointed out that the current situation has triggered the board of directors to intervene and to suspend the director.
The ABOP which is a coalition party and which is led by Ronnie Brunswijk is keeping a close eye on the current developments. Several prominent members of the ABOP have already made it clear that they will not accept decisions that are not in their party’s best interest.
