EBS to stick to loadshedding until the end of November

PARAMARIBO – “The supply of electricity in Suriname is expected to remain under pressure for the next 5 weeks.

Times of Suriname

The current loadshedding is expected to last until the end of November especially given the fact that some of the power plants must be taken offline because of necessary maintenance. Meanwhile the Energy Company Suriname (EBS) will try to expand its production capacity to lift the shortages,” said Natural Resources Minister David Abiamofo. “The EBS is doing everything to keep the capacity at the usual level,” said the minister. Production at the Afobaka hydroplant reportedly remains stable at about 110 MW. The water level, however, is still 2 to 3 feet below average. This makes it difficult to meet the rising demand. Last Tuesday demand peaked at 296 MW. The current power plants can deliver between 274 and 291 MW under the current circumstances. Next week an additional 30 MW will become available when a 6th hydro unit is activated at Afobaka. The situation remains vulnerable die to the maintenance that is scheduled to take place at the Staatsolie Power Company Suriname (SPCS) and the EBS power plant that is located in the Saramaccastraat.
