existing facilities. Minister Currie explained that funds were wasted because facilities that were constructed are not being used. He also does not seem it sensible to set up new facilities while the existing ones are falling apart due to the lack of maintenance. The Minister deems it unwise to construct new infrastructure while existing facilities are not being used or renovated. Due to the limited funds, wise choices must be made so that the funds can be used effectively. The Ministry of Education faces a lack of funds that are needed to repair classrooms but in the past new projects were launched without any sustainable plans or maintenance strategy. “It is terrible to see how much Capital was wasted while money is needed to renovate the existing classrooms,” said Minister Currie who referred to a meeting he had recently with the district commissioner and the chief of the Amerindian village of Apoera in the  Sipaliwini District. The DC and the village chief informed the minister of Education that the work center and the teachers’ houses are not being used. The Education Ministry wants to make these facilities suitable for use. The minister wants to make sure that the existing infrastructure is used optimally. New projects can be considered when it becomes clear how the facilities will be put to use and if there are enough students and teachers to occupy them. “No new facilities will be constructed,” Minister Currie said.
