PARAMARIBO - Health Minister Andre Misiekaba recently announced that the emergency posts that were opened several weeks ago have started to prove their effectiveness.

The emergency posts have evidently relieved pressure on the Emergency Room at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). “Things are going as expected. When we look at the numbers, we see that a growing number of people are opting for the emergency posts,” said Minister Misiekaba who explained that each patient who shows up at an emergency post is one less patient at the Emergency Room. There is a good turnout at the emergency posts that are located in the Nieuw Weergevondenweg and the Frederik Derbystraat. These posts were established to provide medical treatment to people who require immediate action but whose problem is not life threatening. This enables the ER to focus all of its attention on the cases that are life threatening. Minister Misiekaba pointed out that the positive development has not only been supported by the statistics but also by the responses from the people. “I have received feedback from several people including a former minister who explained that he had received the proper care and that the service was good. Those are all indications that we are on the right track,” said Minister Misiekaba who urged the entire nation to make good use of the emergency posts of the State Health Insurance Fund in non-life threatening situations. “That way we prevent people from flocking to the ER at the AZP. The system works best when the right care is provided at the right place.”
