PARAMARIBO – The import ban on chemicals that was recently announced has raised the eyebrows of farmers. The farmers made it clear that they expect more information from the government and that they want to...

know if there are any other alternatives as the ban will have a huge impact on the agrarian sector. A new state decree includes a list of goods that may no longer be imported. Pesticides that are used by farmers are also on that list. MP Natalie Amatmohamed (VHP) pointed out that the ban raises many questions because it seems like government officials did not take into account the fact that the agrarian sector needs pesticides. The farmers therefore want to know if the government has already thought about products to replace the ones that have been banned or about a transitional phase so that they can adjust to the new situation. MO Amatmohamed also wanted to know why the government did not consult the stakeholders before opting for the import ban.
