Times of Suriname

The discussion of a new bill was boycotted after the female members of the coalition refused to participate in the session in response to the controversial statement. During an interview with the Dutch radio station Stanvaste Radio MP Van Samson stated that “a woman should never again become president of Suriname”. That statement triggered a fierce response among the members of the coalition. The female members from the coalition demanded that Van Samson must apologize for his misogynistic statement. Despite multiple interruptions and attempts by Chairman Ashwin Adhin to restore the ‘peace’, MP Van Samson stuck by his statement and refused to apologize by claiming that his words were taken out of context in an attempt to incriminate him. “We do not accept that discrimination, that gender discrimination and we will leave your session under protest”, said MP Rosellie Cotino (NDP). The faction of the VHP which is the only faction in the opposition made it clear that it stood by the refusal of its MP to apologize. Due to the fact that there was no room for compromise, the female members of the coalition decided to boycott the session. MP Krishna Mathoera who had made it clear that she wanted to run for president for the elections of May 2025 made it clear that this issue must not unnecessarily be dramatized. She pointed out that the current coalition must remain consistent and explained that the male colleagues of the current coalition had also made distasteful comments about her and that one of those statements had even led to a lawsuit. “When we are talking about moral issues we must remain consistent”, said MP Mathoera.
