PARAMARIBO - Last week President Chandrikapersad Santokhi claimed that the electoral agencies would need about 4 to 6 weeks to officially announce final election results.

But sources told Times of Suriname that several polling stations would organize their public sessions this week to publicly announce the results.
Wendy Jap-A-Joe, deputy chairwoman of the Central Main Polling Bureau (CHS), explained that the CHS has set a deadline for the announcement of the official election results namely June 9th. After the announcement the Independent Election Bureau (OKB) will need two days to declare the election results binding. The deputy chairwoman pointed out that the constitution does not mention any deadline and that the CHS held its public sessions on June 16th during the elections of 2020. “If we are ready on June 9th, we will actually be ahead of schedule. The CHS has nothing to do with the statements of the president and we do not know what those statements were based on,” said Jap-A-Joe. “The new parliament has to have its first session on June 29th so if the CHS finishes up its work on June 9th, there will be enough time left to prepare for the new parliament,” said Jap-A-Joe.
