
NICKERIE - Two fishermen recently paid a fine of SRD 200,000 for smuggling fireworks.

After the case was settled out of court the fishermen were released from jail. The fireworks will be sold by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The authorities have beefed up river patrols because of the holidays. The Regional Support Team West which is a special police unit and the Maritime Police arrested the two Guyanese suspects on December 28th. 33-year-old DR and 58-year-old FY were charged with smuggling fireworks because they had brought fireworks into Suriname without a permit. They were also charged with breaking the immigration law. The suspects were reportedly in possession of 19 boxes that contained illegal fireworks.
