PARAMARIBO – Former Health Minister Amar Ramadhin strongly criticized his successor after a press release indicated that the workers at the Health Ministry disapproved of the way he ran the ministry when he was in office.

According to Ramadhin, the actions of Health Minister André Misiekaba and his advisor are “amateurish, baseless and politically motivated.” The Ministry of Health, Labor and Wellbeing recently released a press release which indicated that several workers from the main office complained about the manner in which Ramadhin ran the ministry. Ramadhin claimed that the “individual feelings” of workers were mentioned. Those workers accused the former Health Minister of favoritism, hiring incompetent people and having ethnic preferences while he was in office.
Ramadhin expressed shock over the fact that “the minister who is also a pastor and his advisor turned baseless, unverified and unnuanced opinions of individuals into official statements.” He distanced himself from the contents of the press release and accused the new minister of committing character assassination and carrying out political attacks. Ramadhin pointed out during the past couple of days that the workers at the Health Ministry failed to notice that the new minister has already hired a father and son as his advisor and head of protocol respectively. “Don’t the workers consider that ‘family and friends’ or favoritism?” The former minister accused his successor of hypocrisy and made it clear that the Health Ministry should focus on its policy rather than tackling the past. “I had hoped that the press release would contain a plan of action or a policy note for the nation’s healthcare sector would be presented. Hopefully it will come,” said Ramadhin who added that the challenges in the healthcare sector are gigantic and therefore require immediate attention. He mentioned the recent payment of € 500,000 on July 16th for the installation of a cancer radiation machine at the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). “The most urgent cases were handled by the previous administration,” said Ramadhin who defended his active policy which he claimed was aimed at finding solutions even in the last weeks of his term in office. Ramadhin’s message to his successor is loud and clear: “Stick to the core of the problem and start realizing that we are in the phase where political propaganda and stage talk are no longer necessary,” said Ramadhin who added that two months have passed since the elections and that the clock is ticking towards 2030.
