PARAMARIBO- The French patrol vessel La Confiance is currently moored in our port in connection with fifty years of constitutional independence of Suriname.

On Saturday evening, during a reception on board, the French ambassador Nicolas de Lacoste took the opportunity to indicate that because of the common border, our armed forces have the common mission to protect their population.
He underlined that the two countries face the same challenges in terms of the protection of the Marowijne River. "We think that this beautiful place, the basin of the Marowijne River, should remain a basin of life. Together we must prevent it from turning into an uninhabitable lunar landscape".
It is known that the French gendarmerie supports its Surinamese counterpart in the logistical surveillance of the border area. Various donations have been made in recent months to achieve a balanced strength on the river. And according to the ambassador, his country will be willing to make this contribution.
The ambassador ended his speech in Surinamese with the words: "Friends. I’m glad to be here. together with you. French is your Friend. We live as good neighbors. He also took the opportunity to appeal in Dutch to the Surinamese authorities to get the border agreement reached in 2021 ratified as soon as possible.
