PARAMARIBO – The French armed forces recently launched maritime operations off the coast of neighboring French Guiana.

The operations which are aimed at tackling illegal fishing and drug smuggling come at the time when the United States of America is carrying out similar operations near the coast of Venezuela. Suriname and Guyana which are located between the operations of both powerful countries have often been criticized over the illegal activities that take place within their exclusive economic zones. The French Guianese operation is seen as an attempt to tighten its grip on the border area that it shares with Suriname. On October 18th the French navy conducted operations along the western coast of French Guiana. All of these areas namely Mana, Apatou, Grand-Santi, Maripasoula and Saint- Laurent are located along the border with Suriname. Since last year the French inspect all of the canoes that leave Albina to cross the river and enter the port of French Guiana. Every week dozens of people are sent back to Suriname and goods have also been seized by the authorities.
