PARAMARIBO – Parents who brought their children to one of the 13 government daycare centers last Monday had an unpleasant surprise because the doors were...

closed due to the fact that the workers had initiated a walkout. The workers went to the main office of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Sozavo) to ask Minister Diana Pokie to address the problems that they face at work.Naomi Olf, acting chairperson of the Association for Employees at Government Daycare Centers, announced that the workers would get back to work on Tuesday. She explained that the decision to stage a walkout was made at last Friday's union meeting. One of the biggest problems is the shortage of workers at the government daycare centers. As a result of this problem the workers often have to work double shifts. This puts more pressure on them and makes it increasingly difficult to do their job in a responsible manner. The workers from the government daycare centers also complained about the problems surrounding Stichting Beheer en Exploitatie Crèches (SBEC). Minister Pokie pointed out that the problems affect the workers as well as parents and their children who are dependent on daycare. She assured the workers that she would address their demands and the problems at the daycare centers. Minister Pokie revealed that she had already held talks with the union, advisors and the director at Sozavo, Sherwin Valies.
