Government has unpaid phone bills of SRD 1.1 billion

PARAMARIBO - The government reportedly has to pay more money to cover the phone bills than was previously mentioned.

Times of Suriname

It reportedly has to pay the Telecommunications Company Suriname (Telesur) SRD 1.1 billion instead of just SRD 244 million. Home Affairs Minister Marinus Bee had previously announced that his ministry had to pay Telesur SRD 244 million. Reports indicate that multiple ministries and government offices did not face any restrictions when making calls for many years which is why they could keep racking up the phone bills. Minister Bee made it clear that as of December 3rd this has become a thing of the past. “We have either frozen all accounts or switched them over to prepaid. As of now each user must pay his own bill,” said the minister. Meanwhile the Ministry of Home Affairs has launched a registration of all of the numbers to determine the job description of each person who has a number that actually belongs to the government. The ministry will determine a call limit of SRD 10,000 to SRD 5,000 depending on the activities.
