PARAMARIBO - No new bauxite deal between Suriname and Aluminum Corporation of China Limited (Chinalco) will be discussed for now.

The visit of the top executivea of Chinalco to Vice President Gregory Rusland who was acting President at the time of the visit. President Jennifer Simons made it clear that her administration is not holding talks yet with Chinalco. “I have spoken to the VP about it because he said that the people had asked to talk and that he would listen. And I think that he has done that,” said President Jennifer Simons when she returned from a foreign trip. The confusion regarding a new deal that was being prepared is subtlety being blamed on reporters and the media but it was the government’s very own information service that creates the confusion with a press release that was published on its website. Meanwhile that media report has been taken down from the website. “I do not know how that media report came to be. Maybe the reporters were too enthusiastic. I don’t know,” said President Simons who added that “the government is not talking to Chinalco.” “Not yet. We do not refuse to talk to people. We talk to everyone. But what I read there as headline was not the case. Chinalco asked for a meeting with the vice president. And that is what happened.” President Simons explained that her administration’s position is clear. Bauxite will not be exported as raw material. Not understand any circumstance. It must first be processed into something else like aluminium before it can be exported.
