as an independent nation, according to Minister of Culture and Entertainment Olivia “Babsy” Grange. Grange, in an interview with the Jamaica Observer, said that the 2025 instalment of the Grand Gala spectacle will be the grandest it has ever been, with several icons set to be celebrated for their outstanding contributions to nation-building.

Plans are in place to recognize the legacies of cultural icons such as Beres Hammond, Capleton and Leroy Sibbles. “We’re gonna honour icons Beres Hammond, Capleton, and Leroy Sibbles who have played a huge part in pushing our music and culture on a global scale. They have represented us well as a country, flown the flag high for us worldwide, and this is our way of saying: “Thank you, we see you, and we appreciate you,’ ” Grange said. “We will have Luciano and Chris Martin performing and a cast of over 3,000, so it’s going to be a big, big thing.”

The Grand Gala is set for Independence Day, Wednesday, August 6. Grange shared that, with preparations now at fever-pitch, the showcase will put the best of the island’s talent on display. “As usual, the Grand Gala will be grand. Every year we try to make it grander. We draw performers from the plains of St Catherine and Kingston and St Andrew, and again we train them. They always give an awesome show, and this year will be no different,” she said. “You can expect an excellent production, the usual fireworks, drone show, and in addition to that scenes that will be exciting. We’re going to recreate the Port Royal experience because we know that we were inscribed this year by UNESCO as a world heritage site,” she said.

On July 12, 2025 the World Heritage Committee inscribed The Archaeological Landscape of 17th Century Port Royal, Jamaica, on the World Heritage List. This decision came a decade after the inscription of the Blue and John Crow Mountains as the country’s first world heritage site. Minister Grange shared that, while many will flock to the National Stadium for the highly anticipated event, not everyone will be accommodated, and therefore a watch party will be held at Independence Village in the National Arena.
