MAROWIJNE – A head-on collision between two cars that took place on the East-West Highway near Adjoema Bergi last Friday night claimed the lives of both drivers.
When a police unit from the Moengo Police Station arrived on the scene, the officers spotted a car that was in fire. The driver of that car perished in the flames when his car caught fire. One of the cars was driven by 31-year-old J.E. while the other car was driven by 21-year-old J.A. Investigators explained that J.E. was driving his black Volkswagen Golf from Moengo to Albina while J.A. came from the opposite direction in his white Toyota Vitz. It is suspected that when J.A. was in the vicinity of Adjoema Bergi, he lost control over the steering wheel and his car ended up on the other side of the road. The head-on collision that followed proved fatal to both drivers. As a result of the impact of the collision, the Volkswagen quickly caught fire. The charred body of J.E. was found in his burnt out car. The investigation is ongoing. These two deaths have brought the number of road deaths in the Traffic Safety Month to 4. At the official start of the 13th edition of the Traffic Safety Month, Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath urged road users to stick to the speed limit and to make sure that they do not get distracted in traffic. The TSM which started on August 15th will be concluded on September 15th.
