PARAMARIBO – A 31-year-old pedestrian, V.L., who was rushed to the Emergency Room after having been run over by a car early in the morning on January 15th...

reportedly died in the hospital. On the day in question the Uitvlugt Police Station received a call about a traffic accident on the corner of the Brokopondolaan and the Vigilantiastraat around a quarter past 4. When police officers arrived on the scene, they spotted the pedestrian lying on his stomach on the road. V.L. who had a serious injury at the back of his head was in critical condition so he was rushed to the Emergency Room of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP). While the police officers looked for clues at the scene of the accident a 63-year-old passerby who identified himself as L.K. approached them and explained that he was the one who had called them. L.K. told the police that he was on his way home and that he spotted V.L. before pulling over and rushing over to help him. He then called the police. Investigators concluded that this was a hit-and-run because the driver of the vehicle that ran the pedestrian over had fled the scene. V.L. died at the hospital on January 18th. The police are urging people with information about the hit-and-run to share this information with them. Anyone with information can call the Command Center at 115 or the Traffic Investigation Unit Paramaribo at 403381.
The police also urged the perpetrator to take responsibility for this tragedy. “Report to the Traffic Investigation Unit Paramaribo or the nearest police station. You should realize that your attempt to flee is only worsening the pain of the relatives of the victim. You can’t turn back the hands of time but you can, however, prevent having to carry the weight of this secret on your conscience for the rest of your life,” said the police.
