Some families explained that they are familiar with this problem. A concerned mother told Times of Suriname that her two children did not go to school this last school year because she could not find a spot for them. She fears that her children will also be forced to stay home this school year. The woman explained that she had found a school that would take her children in but that she had to buy two chairs and two tables for her children. She pointed out that “I did not have the money to buy the tables and chairs.” “I did not have the money”, said the woman. Jeniffer van Dams is one of the parents who are still waiting for a call from the Ministry of Education. She hopes that her daughter will be placed at a school near her house or workplace. “I still have to buy school supplies and I need to know which supplies I have to buy, I also do not know if the uniform must have the logo of the school”, said Van Dams. Another woman complained that she still has not been able to enroll her son and that she wonders when he will finally be given a spot at a school. All of the parents pointed out that “this uncertainty is putting a lot of pressure on us”. They worry that their children will be placed at a school that is located far from their home. These parents hope that children who are younger than 11 will not be put at schools that are far from their home. Due to the rising costs of livelihood, they can’t afford to send their child to school in a school bus. One of the school principals explained that the schools are currently doing their best to create more room at their schools for pupils. “But my school has already reached its maximum capacity. We are nevertheless looking for ways to accommodate more pupils.” Meanwhile the parents whose children are still at home hope that the ministry will find a solution fast.
