PARAMARIBO - Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath recently explained that he unnoticably kept receiving payments from the foreign currency commission of the Ministry...

of Finance and Planning that he used to be a member of. Last Monday MP Asiskumar Gajadien, leader of the VHP faction in parliament, revealed the ongoing payments. Minister Monorath made it clear that he was not aware of the issue and promised to return all of the money to sender. He explained that he had assumed that the payments would be frozen after he had informed the commission of his new job as minister of Justice and Police. The minister himself pointed out that legally the ministerial position cannot be combined with other jobs. “The protocol at the foreign currency commission is aimed at removing members who have found another job from the payroll. I assumed that the oral notification would suffice,” said the minister in parliament. Minister Monorath assured parliament would he would send the notification in writing this time and that he would also inform the foreign currency commission that he kept receiving his salary. He pointed out that for the past couple of months he has not checked his bank account where the money was transferred to. The issue came to light after the revelation was made by
MP Gajadien (VHP).
President Jennifer Simons, Vice President Gregory Rusland, Chairman Ashwin Adhin and all of the factions from the coalition are convinced that the minister has done nothing wrong and moved on to the order of the day.
MP Gajadien pointed out that these double standards would become a point of discussion.
“If it has happened for a month there would be no problem. But two month, three months? I do not know if it happened for a fourth or fifth month. The fact remains that I made clear that we would see the double standards and the manner in which these double standards are applied has been portrayed to the nation.” It is not clear how much money must be returned to sender.
