PARAMARIBO - Inspectors have recently concluded that many retailers sell products that do not meet the legal requirements. The products often...

lack proper labels and an expiration date. They often weigh less than the weight that is mentioned on the label. “If I look at the rules and the legislation, I would have to close 9 out of 10 stores,” said Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation Minister Andrew Baasaron. “I hear things that are not pretty. And they put the nation, the health of our country men, people who live here and buy goods in stores at serious risk. So we take firm action,” said Minister Baasaron who added that a strategy is being developed to tackle the problems structurally. The Ministry of Economic Affairs uses technology and the coordinated efforts of its team of inspectors to make sure that retailers follow the rules. “Additional funds have been included in the budget for 2026 in order to strengthen the inspections and to raise the bar in association with the retailers,” said Minister Baasaron.
