NICKERIE - A joint team of the western division of the Police Force Suriname raided a private residence located in the Krappahoeklaan on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that the team hit the jackpot as it came across a huge shipment of illegal cigarettes. Police officials revealed that the joint team seized 1,761 cartons of cigarettes from various brands. 50-year-old M.G. who was at the location when the police raided the house was labeled as the prime suspect and was therefore arrested and taken to the Nieuw Nickerie Police Station. He confessed that the illegal cigarettes belong to him and that he sold them to other people in his garage. The suspect was released from police custody after he had paid a hefty fine. The police made it clear that the trade in illegal cigarettes poses a serious threat to the nation’s economy.
