BROKOPONDO - The resistance of illegal miners against their eviction from the concession of Zijin Mining in the Brokopondo District...

did not last long. Last Saturday dozens of camps that were located in the vicinity of Nieuw Koffie Kamp were removed by the authorities. The police operation triggered political responses. MP Geneviévre Jordan (ABOP) made it clear on Facebook that she distanced herself from the operation. Although the ABOP which is a coalition party runs the Ministry of Justice and Police, MP Jordan claimed that the party could not be held accountable for the police operation. MP Jordan claimed that the responsibility lies with the heads of the country. She explicitly referred to the president and the vice president. MP Edgar Sampie (ABOP) also made it clear that he did not support the eviction and that alternatives should have been offered to the gold miners. MP Jordan pointed out that the minister of Justice of Police did not carry out orders from the ABOP. She criticized the heads of the country for the lack of the political will to address the illegal gold mining issue in a structural manner. MP Jordan claimed that Natural Resources Minister David Abiamofo had prepared various plans which were not even taken into consideration due to the lack of political will. She pointed out that the eviction of the miners “is not a sustainable solution” and therefore pleased for better communication and a humane approach. The legislator from the ABOP also warned that there would be political consequences. It has not been ruled out that the government will take more measures to restore and maintain law and order in the area. Last month the activities of the company were put on hold because of a riot that was triggered by the death of an illegal gold miner. The illegal miners who joined the riot destroyed assets of the company. The company suffered more than $12 million in damages during the riot. The rioters also took aim at the firefighters who arrived on the scene to put out the fire that had been set.
