
PARAMARIBO – The government of the Republic of Suriname has declared January 2nd, 2026 a day of national mourning because of the deadly stabbing incident that claimed the lives of 9 people and which took place in the Commewijne District.

The stabbing incident which also claimed the lives of 5 children has sent shockwaves throughout the entire nation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (BIZA) explained that the government expresses its condolences and sympathy with this day of national mourning.
All of the flags that are located at public buildings will be flown half mast from 6 am. until sunset on the day of national mourning. The half mast rule for flags also applies to all of the ships that are at the docks on that day. The administration of President Jennifer Simons also urges citizens and the business community to express sympathy on January 2nd. It also urges local radio and television stations to make sure that their program for that day reflect mourning. The announcement regarding the day of national mourning was signed by Home Affairs Minister Marinus Bee. Last Monday afternoon it was reported that the man who went on a stabbing spree in the Commewijne District last Sunday was found dead in his jail cell that is located in the Keizerstraat.
