withdrawals when they visit the only ATM that is located in their village because it is usually empty. The reason why the ATM is always empty is cause for concern. A local loanshark reportedly goes to the ATM with hundreds of ATM cards at the end of every month to withdraw the money that people owe him. He keeps the ATM cards until the loan has been repaid. Especially senior citizens complained that they cannot afford to travel all the way to the ATM in Nieuw-Nickerie. Whenever the ATM that is located in Wageningen is empty, the local residents have no other choice than to wait for it to be refilled and hope that they can make a withdrawal before the loanshark shows up. Sandjeet Birtantie, who is a member of the local resort council, told Times of Suriname that the problem must be addressed. “It is unacceptable,” said Sandjeet who added that one person occupies the only ATM for several hours to withdraw money. Sandjeet wants officials to make sure that the ATM will once again be at the disposal of everybody instead of just one person. Whenever the people who are standing in line at the ATM tell the loanshark that he has had his turn, he simply tells them that he is also entitled to making withdrawals. Sandjeet made it clear that the interests of the other residents must also be taken into account.
