SAN FRANCISCO - Walt Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year licensing deal to let fans create short AI-generated videos featuring Disney’s characters.

This marks the first major entertainment company to license its characters for AI content at this scale, covering characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars, including Mickey Mouse, Iron Man, Captain America, Darth Vader, and Yoda. The licensing applies to OpenAI’s Sora video-generation platform and ChatGPT, enabling AI-created content up to 30 seconds in length.
Key context: The agreement signals a major shift in the entertainment industry, which has largely pursued legal action against AI firms over training data usage. Disney has recently targeted other tech companies with copyright-related concerns, including a cease-and-desist to Google over IP used to train AI models.
Commercial and strategic aspects: The deal includes a $1 billion equity investment from Disney in OpenAI, plus warrants to purchase additional OpenAI shares. Disney plans to use the technology to develop new products and experiences for Disney+, and to provide ChatGPT to its staff. OpenAI framed the collaboration as a responsible, rights-holder-friendly approach to AI, with protections for creators and age-appropriate policies.
Creative scope and limitations: The license covers more than 200 characters across Disney’s franchises. Notably, the agreement excludes the use of actors’ likenesses and voices. CEO Bob Iger stressed that the videos created under the license will be limited to short-form content and that the partnership is designed to honor creators through licensing and revenue sharing.
Statements and outlook: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the deal as a responsible example of AI and storytelling collaboration. Both companies emphasized responsible AI use and creator protections as a core priority moving forward. Iger also reiterated the importance of Disney protecting its IP and pursuing enforcement when necessary. (Bssnews)
