PARAMARIBO – The corruption network surrounding the Moni Karta program of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (SOZAVO) is vast and politically protected. Social Affairs minister Diana Pokie on...

Friday announced that almost everybody who worked at the department that was involved will be suspended next month pending the results of the investigation. “During the previous administration many people were protected by their party. All of the evidence is present,” said minister Pokie. Under the previous administration the ministry was run by the ABOP which is also part of the current administration. Minister Pokie explained that the political protection made corruption possible. “I have already discussed it with the president. As of January 2nd we will suspend them. That means that the entire department will be empty,” said minister Pokie who added that there are millions in financial losses. Reports indicate that employees of the Surinaamse Postspaarbank (SPSB) that carried out the Moni Karta program were also involved in the corruption scheme. Pokie pointed out that the bank has already taken disciplinary measures against the workers that crossed the line. It is not clear how many workers at this bank were fired because there are no official reports yet. “It was a well-organized thing so it will not be solved within 4 to 5 months,” said minister Pokie. The current contract with the SPSB expires in February 2026.
