PARAMARIBO - Justice and Police Minister Harish Monorath recently issued a warning about the growing normalization of violence in Suriname.

“The glorification of violence — especially among the nation’s youth — is being promoted by the media and artists who should know better,” said Minister Monorath. He added that artists and media outlets should make better use of their influence by promoting positive moral values. “I am counting on artists and other public figures in Suriname to be good role models. Every day, the public is exposed to content that promotes weapons, aggression, and criminal behavior,” the minister said.
Monorath noted that violent content is becoming a daily presence in the media. “If you turn on the TV, one constantly sees violence throughout the entire day. It is being normalized. The media must act responsibly.” The minister explained that, in other countries, there are strict regulations that prohibit the broadcasting of certain types of content during specific hours of the day. He emphasized that a joint effort is needed to curb the glorification of violence in the media. According to Minister Monorath, the government must collaborate with artists and social organizations to reduce the negative influence of the culture of violence.
